Establish a U.S. Department of Peacebuilding

The science of peacebuilding deserves a seat at the table when it comes to making decisions about foreign and domestic policy. The use of violence to resolve personal and international conflicts needs to be a last resort. The Department of Peacebuilding will build the institutional structures needed to help put peaceful means at the forefront.

If we wish to survive as a species and beyond that hope to achieve our "destiny" in the stars, we need to find more ways to wage peace from our daily lives and in our communities to the ways that our nations conduct foreign policy. Logic, compassion and acceptance of all peoples and cultures need to guide our actions. I feel that if we celebrate and learn from such peace heroes, as Dr. King, Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela, our descendents may realize the dream of world peace that has eluded our species for so many millennia...

You are absolutely right, Andrew. One way that we can help co-create a culture of peace is to educate the children, many of whom have come to believe that violence is "power", because they so often see it glorified in video games and movies. We need to tell them of the positive power of peace, the climate in which creative cooperation between people helps everyone make friends, not "enemies". Violence is destructive and war is the worst form, with mass murder, mass misery and massive, wasteful, destruction.
Thanks for your thoughts on this.

Too close to the tree to see the forest.
Change starts within, and then works its way out. Ghandi understood consciousness. That's why he said "BE the change you want to see in the world." Everything we see "out there" is simply a reflection of the collective consciousness.
Our system of 'separation and 'competition' is collapsing all around us. We can try to resist what's going on, but 'resistance' is fruitless. The famed psychiatrist, Abraham Maslow said "What we resist presist. What we look at it disappears."
Just curious, is anyone paying attention to what science is teaching us about the power of 'intention' in 'group consciousness?' It is proving without a shadow of a doubt that there is a "THIRD FORCE" in group intention gatherings. Call that THIRD FORCE God, or Spirit, or whatever. It doesn't matter what we call it. What matters is that we acknowledge that this force exists. Hence, "whenever two or more gather...." Wise scripture indeed. But do we see what it means? Or are we too close to the tree to see the forest?
Science, after years and years of research studies, is now telling us that all it takes to change what's "out there" is a group gathered together "BEING" the change desired to be reflected 'out there.' And science is telling the world just how many conscious individuals gathered together it takes to cause a shaift in world consciousness. Are you ready for this? It takes the square root of one percent of the world's population. That means that less that 10,000 people gathered together with the intention to shift a world paradigm from one of separation and competition to that of unity, cooperation, and collaboration is all it would take.
The Phoenix Arizona folks "get that." We "get" that we are way past the woo woo of all this. So right now we are organizing just such a gathering. This summer we will gather, not 10,000, but 25,000 'conscious individuals' at US Airway Arena. How do we know that this "THIRD FORCE" is in the equation? We have been offered FREE USE of the arena and people are coming out of the woodwork to assist. That's how we know. Come join us or organize the same gathering in your location. Just have the Intention, the THIRD FORCE will take care of the details
Blessings to you,

Right on! I am a professional Nanny and when the children start to fight or play war games, I remind them of how much we need peace. I won't join those games and encourage them to find another game, do art or whatever.
It only takes the square root of one tenth of one percent of a population to change the atmosphere in a given area. The more we have a US Department of Peace Building, getting national coverage, the more the momentum will grow. I have several songs I received about peace and want to get them out there. I need a musical accompaniment, preferably a keyboard with all the effects. We can do it, if we put our hearts to it, so let's do it!

To bring about a change anywhere in the world, the base is pure and sincere love, love for oneself and to your neighbor as thyself. Not ot be relegated to sundays in church, but to be aware every moment of the day. To do this we need to let-go our high and mighty attitudes. Look at each other as brother Americans and unite to build up your country as one family. Then one will also let-go the high and mighty attitude towards the rest of the world and will tend to help and radiate love towards the humans the world over, which will definitely generat reciprocal results. Pleaswe try this out for six months. Thank you and I love all you beautiful people....Quintus

Although peace must be carried in each of our hearts in our thoughts, speech and actions, it is clear that what government leaders do are powerful examples to the world. So while, individually, we must each and every day live in peace and love within ourselves, we must hold our leaders to the same standard. A United States Department of Peace will send that message of peace and love throughout the world!

While the President was meeting with his National Security Council to discuss an escalation of troops in Afghanistan, I couln't help wondering if the character of their discussions would have been changed by the presence of the Secretary of a Department of Peace. I think so.
That is why I am a member of The Peace Alliance and DoPeace and an ardent supporter of Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-OH-10) and H.R.808, To establish a Department of Peace, sposored by Rep. Kucinich.

I agree whole heartedly, Terry.
A Department of Peace member at such meetings could make an important difference in the final decisions of the group.
Dennis Kucinich, Representative from OH deserves support from all of us! His integrity, honesty, courage and tireless dedication to establishing a Department of peace is truly exceptional. If anyone hasn't seen his proposal, check his website. It is a carefully thought out, wise proposal.
One thing I would like to suggest as a change in "mindset" is the idea that violence should even be considered as a "last resort". Who would make such a decision? Any decision for pre-emptive agression should be unacceptable. We've seen the power of nonviolent reactions to violence and need to keep that vision strong.

I am so happy to see that the platform for peace, which we seek in our government, be seen as, and actually named, a Department of Peacebuilding. This connotes the actual activity required in conflict resolution at all levels of society, as building and rebuilding relationships. Thanks, Ted.

Peace on this planet will not be realized until its politico-socio-economic systems are fundamentally improved. The reasons should be obvious.

We are pleased to introduce to you a

Democratic Socioeconomic Platform, in search of a Democratic Political Party.

The defining documentation and developmental discussion of this Democratic Socioeconomic Platform are now available on the website of the Center for the Study of Democratic Societies, which you are hereby respectfully invited to (re)visit.

This Democratic Socioeconomic Platform is based on the theory described and justified in the book Socioeconomic Democracy: An Advanced Socioeconomic System (Praeger, 2002).

More directly, you will find the complete DSeP document and shorter articles further describing or emphasizing different specific aspects of the democratic system at Democratic Socioeconomic Platform.

The Contents of this 2-Part Democratic Socioeconomic Platform are as follows:

Prelude to

A Democratic Socioeconomic Platform, in search of a Democratic Political Party

It seems a different country about this glorious globe experiences/undergoes a “crucially decisive” election practically every few months. Not that many (any?) countries about this polluted planet ever approach, in any meaningful sense, the ideal (whatever that is) of a democratic society.

Not infrequently, the election results are relatively closely decided, e.g., 51/49, up to a ‘divergence from balanced-difference’ of, say, 54/46, regardless of whether 10, 33, 49, 51, 69 or 98 percent of the eligible voters vote.

Then, of course, there is the matter of “Who is eligible to vote?” and the matters of “Who says so, and why?” There is the very wide variation in the confidence of the meaningfulness of participating in some or any particular political process in order to help realize peaceful, just, appropriate and desirable personal benefit, as well as equally farsighted overall societal benefit. And there is the matter of the quality of the questions, even if to be decided democratically, proffered by many contemporary politicians, political parties and political processes.

And all the above is regardless of considerations such as the magnitude, frequency and extent of the accidental as well as intentional alterings of any supposed democratic voting process outcome by strategically placed technological capability employing a wide variety of ingenious new inventions, as well as all the old tried-and-true traditional ploys of vote intimidation, shaving and fraud.

In those relatively fewer situations where a large majority of the eligible voters, which in turn make up a large portion of the “adult” population, vote for the same person or plan, it can be assumed, or at least strongly suspected, that the society is either doing something very, very good (relatively speaking) or experiencing something very, very bad (in an absolute and no-doubt painful way). More frequently, the latter situation prevails … (continued at)

Introduction to a Democratic Socioeconomic Platform

The purpose of this Democratic Socioeconomic Platform is to put forth a new, fundamentally just, democratic and systemically consistent political platform capable of, when democratically implemented, satisfactorily resolving or significantly reducing a wide variety of contemporary serious societal problems, as well as effectively enhancing the General Welfare of All Citizens of a Democratic Society.

Socioeconomic Democracy, which is the essence of the proposed DSeP, can be viewed as engaging in Transformational Politics, that is, an evolutionary politics that consciously, openly, honestly, forthrightly, publicly, peacefully, democratically and successfully works to realize Synergetic Inclusive Societal Improvement. It will be seen that Socioeconomic Democracy contributes significantly to the Positive Empowerment and Healthy Development of all Participants of a Democratic Society.

Specifically, Socioeconomic Democracy (SeD) is a theoretical and practical socioeconomic system wherein there exist both some form and amount of locally appropriate Universally Guaranteed Personal Income (UGI) and some form and amount of locally appropriate Maximum Allowable Personal Wealth (MAW), with both the lower bound on personal material poverty and the upper bound on personal material wealth set and adjusted democratically by all participants of a democratic society … (continued at)

Different Possibilities for the Magnitudes of the Two Democratically Set Bounds of Universally Guaranteed Personal Income (UGI) and Maximum Allowable Personal Wealth (MAW) in the practice of Socioeconomic Democracy

This particular episode in the continuing discussions of the specifics of Socioeconomic Democracy and a Democratic Socioeconomic Platform is devoted primarily to encouraging and expanding awareness and appreciation of the very wide ranges of possibilities when considering and democratically determining the locally appropriate, societally acceptable, desirable and desired bounds on personal material poverty and personal material wealth, as suggested by Socioeconomic Democracy.

The current startling and somewhat spectacular global economic implosion, the painful, unjust ramifications for literally billions of “ordinary” people simply trying to live a meaningful life, the “necessary” further neglect of those already too neglected, and the increasing demand for fundamentally improved economic systems everywhere, all emphasize the necessity of a critical and detailed consideration of various possible specific numerical values of the societally tolerable bounds on personal material poverty and wealth. The alleged popularity and desirability of democracy, whether sincere or not, allows for and facilitates this exploration of possibilities … (continued at)

Ramifications of Socioeconomic Democracy

It is clear the world desperately needs a fundamentally improved economic system. Two major aspects of this necessary improvement are the Definition of Wealth and the Distribution of Wealth. The democratic distribution of wealth and the resultant desirable ramifications in the socioeconomic realm are considered here. …

As described at length elsewhere, Socioeconomic Democracy would create economic incentive and provide necessary funds to effect significant reduction in an almost surprisingly diverse array of unnecessary yet painful individual, societal and global problems.

These intimately intertwined problems include (but are by no means limited to) those familiar ones involving: automation, computerization and robotization; budget deficits and national debts; bureaucracy; maltreatment of children; crime and punishment; development, sustainable or otherwise; ecology, environment, resources and pollution; education; the elderly; the feminine majority; inflation; international conflict; intranational conflict; involuntary employment; involuntary unemployment; labor strife and strikes; sick medical and health care; military metamorphosis; natural disasters; pay justice; planned obsolescence; political participation; poverty; racism; sexism; untamed technology; and the General Welfare. Below are sketched some of the desirable impact of Socioeconomic Democracy on all these serious societal problems … (continued at)

Hey Brad-
Thanks for mentioning the USIP - they do good work on the international peacbuilding front but:
a) They don't do anything on the domestic front to address issues like gang violence, child abuse, and domestic violence. The proposed Department of Peacebuilding will also include domestic issues.
b) They serve an advisory role and are not included in Cabinet-level discussions when issues of foreign policy are being debated. The Secretary of Peacebuilding would have responsibility and authority to make certain nonviolent means of conflict resolution are considered as a first resort.
c) The USIP budget is nominal, at best. The Department of Peacebuilding would have the resources necessary to act on the types of recommendations that would come out of the USIP.
As you can see, the proposed Department of Peacebuilding would leverage the on-going work of the USIP and help make sure the tools and techniques they champion are more widely used than they are today, both internationally and domestically.

We have shown what we want can be had by violence. Since Cain this has not worked. What we get is the next decades going for revenge, and fear, if they can't be the one on the top of the hill. This is what we teach the young. Then yell foul when they use what they were taught. We need a change in our behavior and our thinking.

I consider it good to do what you want to do, however I have a question? How will you get this done? Martin Luther King Jr. once said that those people who exercise power will not gie it up without a struggle. IN this case we need to pressure the real people who hold power in this government, namely the CEOs of the companies that give money to conservatives in congress in both parties for the actions and legislation that we want. See http://www.democratz.org

I sent this letter to President Obama by fax the other day. Spread the word. Sign the petitions.

Dear President Obama

I come to you today to praise you and to criticize you and to petition you.

I want to tell you a true story which just happened a few days ago. I came into this world 4 years after World War II. When I grew up partly in New York City and Partly in Nassau Country New York, as a young boy I would watch Meet the Press. I watched this show as a boy of 6 or 7. I watched the people of the era talk about the issues. I also watched Mike Wallace's You are there as well. I recall seeing other programs about famous people. I saw newsreels of a man who wore a white sheet. NO! not that kind of white sheet! Mohandas Gandhi, wore a white sheet of cotton. Why did Gandhi wear white sheets? He wanted to set an example for his people to make their own cloth and not buy goods from his oppressors who occupied his country.

He appeared a modern day Moses, but of another religion. I have a number of heroes like Gandhi. Most of them died, except for Nelson Mandela and Bishop Desmond Tutu. Considering myself a Jewish person, I find that good that people from other religions and other people's can serve as examples for heroes as it tends to unite people of different backgrounds. Each of these heroes, Moses, Martin Luther King Jr., Cesar Chavez, Nelson Mandela, Bishop Tutu eventually brought their oppressors down by not cooperating with their oppressors.

The other day, I spoke to the great grandson of Mohandas Gandhi. I had sought to speak to his father, the grandson of Mohandas Gandhi. I never expected to ever speak to anyone in this family of Gandhi. I told him that I thanked his great grandfather for his work and that he inspired me as I used to see newsreels of his great grandfather during the 1950's and 1960's and especially using boycotts to eventually uniting his people of India to eject their oppressors out of their country. I told Gandhi's great grandson of my electronic PAMPHLET on the web and again thanked him and said good day.

Now, I say to you Mr. President, that I want a real populist President similar to Franklin Delano Roosevelt and I and other people will make you do it, just like FDR told his supporters to make him do what they wanted him to do.

So in the tradition and inspiration of Moses and Cesar Chavez and Martin Luther King Jr. and Nelson Mandela and Bishop Desmond Tutu and their people I say to you again we will make you do it.

How? By boycotting the products of those of your friends in corporations who donated money to you, and donated money to Republicans and to conservatives in the Democratic party who have led this country down a path to the second great depression. The only reason that we have not descended further appears that we had citizens back about 77 years ago who made FDR do it and had good regulations in place today that the conservatives in both parties want to repeal. So from now on I will no longer donate money to the Democratic party although I remain a member. Again I will not buy products from major companies that donate money to conservatives in both parties and I will demand progressive legislation that really helps the poor and middle class people instead of the undeserving wealthy at this point of crisis in our country, of the CEOs that run those companies and until that happens they will lose business from me and many other people such that we will put pressure on those CEOs to help get us the legislation that we want.

I agreed with the bailout of the banks and the partial nationalization of GM and Chrysler but now it appears OUR turn such that we get a $10 an hour minimum wage, a passage of the employee free choice act, a passage of the women's freedom of choice act, a passage of a compromise SINGLE PAYER PUBLIC OPTION paid for by general taxes which will allow private health insurance but in which those who choose this new single payer public option will have no premiums, no copayments, no yearly deductibles, no recisions, no rejection for preexisting conditions and cover everything: doctors visits, surgery, hospital stays, abortion, dentistry, eye care, nursing home and hospice care and home care and it will serve as a health insurance EXODUS so that the private health insurance companies will let our people go. We also need to end the war in Iraq and a way to end the war in Afghanistan but we need to help build Afghanistan up so the Taliban and Al Qaeda will no longer get the favor of some people in Afghanistan. We need other legislation that helps those less fortunate in our country.

Republicans only talk about freedom but they offer us no real solutions. These Republican corporate masters only offer us FIEFDOM and wage slavery and a kind of slavery to insurers where they exploit the economic conditions of those who don't have enough money to pay for their insurance and not freedom. These Republican corporate masters offer their middle class and even poor supporters FREEDUMB organizing them in a rabble of misnamed fake populist Tea partiers for which those Boston patriots of a few centuries ago would probably say, hey these Republican FREEDUMB lovers HAVE REPRESENTATION, so what excuse do they have for disrupting government town halls that we helped to establish?

Really Mr. President, those present day so called tea partiers appear a perversion of those real patriots that helped liberate our country a few centuries ago. Do these false tea partiers stand for a living wage? No. Do these false tea partiers stand for unions? No. Do these false tea partiers stand for helping those less fortunate in our country? No.

These Recruited Republican FREEDUMB lovers claim that they appear PATRIOTs.

I say NAY, those Recruited Republican rabble appear as

stand PAT RIOTers

disrupting government who attempt to help the less fortunate in our country. How many times have I seen or heard this Republican rabble express their contempt for the poor and less fortunate in the middle class? I have seen and heard such contempt by these conservatives for decades blaming most of the poor and less fortunate middle class for their own problems as an excuse to shift blame away from many corporations who disadvantage such people and also as an excuse to have government dissolve in the area of social justice.

These Republican rabble stand PAT RIOTers want us to stand pat for their corporate masters to continue to profit on the suffering of people in many areas and not just health care. They want us to stand pat and yell no more higher taxes deliberately wanting the American people to not see the way corporate governors want to PRIVATELY TAX people with low pay aka Cheap labor aka wage theft not giving workers in many cases the worth of their work that they do and suppressing the organization of people in unions. These corporate governors also tax people privately with high prices in a cartel working with other corporate governors in fixing prices so even though you have a few companies in a sector of products you really have a polyopoly keeping PRIVATE TAXES high in a lot of product sectors. Yes high prices and low wages function as a PRIVATE TAXATION system run by private government which the Republicans support and come from and they have their stooges in the stand PAT RIOT movement to pose as as populists. NAY!

So next time Republicans criticize our party for taxation in their miscommunications at election time we Democrats will remind the people that the Republicans continue to tax us PRIVATELY and raise these PRIVATE TAXES through POLYOPOLY, DUOPOLY, MONOPOLY, cheap labor and high prices and that Republicans need to get relieved of their power in government which they deliberately sabotage social programs through deliberate deficit creation through oil wars, unjust tax breaks for the wealthy and cutting of social programs. This deliberate deficit creation has gone on for 30 years now started by Ronald Reagan the miscommunicator and it has to stop. The Republicans create a huge deficit so when they get relieved of power then the Democrat has to clean up the mess and cannot or will not continue on the path of social justice or water it down such that supporters of Democrats get angry as they did in Bill Clinton's time and now yours!

So Mr. President, we will make you promote real social justice and not catering to corporations in the quest for social justice and eliminate these so called public private partnerships that these corporations take too much money from the poor and less fortunate that the Republicans have done in the past years and until this day and create regular government programs that do not allow these corporations to leech upon the public and profit to the detriment of middle class and poor people.

I have seen this in Medicare Part D and Medicare Disadvantage and now thanks to conservative Democrats we face this in the new health insurance and Pharmaceutical company enrichment act of 2010.

No more Mr. President. No More.

Help the middle class and the poor and until then, the Democratic party gets no money from me and in 2010 and 2012 I will go to the polls and only vote on referenda, meaning I will not vote for anyone for representative, senator and President. I will stay in the Democratic party and do what I can to rid us these conservatives in OUR party from power by peaceful means through boycotts of consumers products of their contributors that give them money and convince other Democrats to also boycott these contributors to conservatives in both parties and force these CEOs to go to congressional leaders and tell the leaders that hundreds of thousands of people will no longer buy from the CEOs companies until congress passes real progressive legislation that citizens want and have petitioned the CEOs for.

In the end, Mr. President we will get this done peacefully and we will do everything peaceful to make you help us.

In the tradition of Moses, Gandhi, Cesar Chavez, Martin Luther King Jr., Nelson Mandela, Bishop Desmond Tutu, we will get this done for social Justice for the less fortunate in our country. I encourage other people reading this open letter to the President to organize and petition the government and the CEOs of corporations that aid meanspirited conservatives in both parties to go to my electric pamphlet at http://www.democratz.org and sign those petitions that you see best to accomplish social justice for the less fortunate in our country. Once you sign them, electronic letters will go out right away to congressional leaders and the Corporations that aid meanspirited conservatives. Do this for the less fortunate! Let our people grow and to meanspirited conservatives, let our people GO from your greed, high prices and wage slavery and private taxes and your religious oppression.

So let it get written so let it get done.

Sincerely,

http://www.democratz.org
I created these petitions for social justice. These petitions appear different from regular petitions. These petitions allow people to boycott conservative contributors that give money to conservatives in both parties.
I enthusiastically voted for Barack Obama in 2008. Now I appear disappointed that President Obama made deals with Big Pharma and the health insurance industry. This administration looks like Clinton II.

Please sign these NEW petitions for single payer health care HR676 as primary legislation or for HR676 as the public option.

See also my "Save $700 billion a year", under "Jobs and Economy". We should vote for each other, IMHO. Also it would be nice for Change.org to have some mechanism for those supporting related ideas to get together and merge their proposals, to combine support.
Spread it around!!

You get what you pay for. Today we spend more on war and military than the rest of the world combined, and what we get is more war. By diverting even just 2% of what we currently spend on war and war preparation to this US DoP and Non Violence, we will be finally paying for what we say we really want. Let's back up the words with money and action. Peace must be at the table in the cabinet of the President.

There are many good comments about peace above. Peace, no doubt involves politics. It also involves education, stable family life, stable jobs and more. I have worked for a small minority thought all my adult life (for nearly 40 years). International war often revolves around ignorance and the total lack of contact between nations. That is why I must urge people to vote for the proposal on Esperanto. It has given me vast oportunity to travel the world, receive and host people from dozens of countries in an atmosphere of relative equality. The status quo of international relations based on the superiority of the United States (and England before it) and the English language must end. Esperanto, requiring a fourth of the effort to learn, compared with a Chinese person studying English must be supported.

You are so right, Jean!
All real change in the past was made by the people speaking up to injustices with big rallys that politicians could not ignore. If such groups as the "Tea Party" can organize such rallys, surely we can do even better with the help of existing organizations like Peace Action, PSR, Veterans for Peace, and many more. Maybe some of us who agree with this, can take responsibility for contacting specific NGOs to form a coalition for the biggest rally in D.C. that was ever seen. I would be happy to help.

This is an awesome idea, but first i think we need to take care of our war crimes so as to protect any more children from being mutilated, melted or mutated.

I just feel this HAS to happen first:

This is a great opportunity for the U.S. to lead in a way that no other major country has. In our nation's history, there has never been a generation of citizens that did not know war. It's time to do the right thing. Peacebuilding is the best gift we can give our children.

Esperanto is the best thing we can give our children to avoid international ignorance and guarantee international equality. The United States has long lost it's ability to lead. www.EsperantoFriends.blogspot.com

We've "done" war and look where it has taken our country. Until we learn how to love our neighbors (locally, regionally, internationally) we cannot expect to live in a world that encourages growth and acceptance of all peoples. Just as John said above, Peacebuilding is the best gift we can give our children. It's a gift to all of us, the world over.

We also need to eliminate the Department of War.
Reduce the government.
Close IRS, CIA, and the TSA while we're at it.

Since one key reason for spending trillions of dollars on our military is to keep the people SAFE and secure from foreign/domestic enemies...should we not have a PEACE department that seeks the same goal through less costly and more "evolved" avenues???

Vote for a peace department~

I so agree with all the comments above.
And, think about it -- no one wins a war. The cost of war on all levels is too much. Let there be differences on the planet -- and let there be honoring and respect for those differences -- as long as everyone is safe and happy.
Gerardo, you said it very well -- Hello? Is anyone home? War is old-school -- let's see the world enlightened to the next level of wisdom and love.

Hello all,
Please consider voting for my suggestion, which:
* complements your/this suggestion
* is in the Jobs & the Economy category
* calls for "jobs stimulus" that subsidizes American consumers and producers of customized education, and American operators of associated online markets
* draws on the work of top learning scientists, growth economists, innovation scholars, research organizations, etc.
* if acted on, will do A LOT of good for children
My suggestion: www.change.org/ideas/view/jobs_stimulus ... ne_markets

Hi. This is yoko ono.
I fully support the idea of voting for a DEPARTMENT OF PEACE.
It’s so exciting to see the family of peace working to keep ourselves up in the top ten!
Every bit helps to make World Peace a reality.
I didn’t know that we are getting so strong in numbers, as well!
Lots of love, yoko
