Studies of the famous impotence drug, Viagra, have linked it to reduced pregnancies in mice, however adverse fertility effects in humans have been unfounded. Often prescribed to older men experiencing erectile problems, research has released reports of increasing numbers of younger people taking Viagra for recreational purposes.

A study involving mice found that mice given equal amounts of human Viagra fertilized approximately 30 percent fewer female eggs than normal and many of the fertilized eggs were shown to grow at a slower pace.

Since Viagra was launched in 1998, about 23 million men worldwide have taken the impotence drug. The average age of the Viagra user was 50 years old.

It has yet to be determined how Viagra might disrupt the sperm’s internal functions.

The drug works by inhibiting an enzyme called phosphodiesterase into the human cells, which then results in the accumulation of another molecule called cyclic GMP. One of the effects of this process includes the expansion of the blood vessels that help men achieve an erection.

Researchers claimed they were unable to prove if the effects of Viagra would be long-term on mouse fertility and if there were any adverse fertility effects in humans. It was also unclear whether or not the fertility of women, who took Viagra for arousal purposes, was affected. If the findings prove that human’s fertility are negatively affected by Viagra, then the success rate of in vitro fertilization will be under scrutiny, considering men at the fertility clinics are frequently given Viagra to assist them with giving a sperm sample.

Dr. Mercola's Comments:

Viagra does not treat the underlying problem and carries with it a list of dangerous side effects including heart disease and stroke. So, rather than popping a pill that will cost you around $10 a pill, why not save yourself that expense and avoid serious potential health repercussions by seeking alternative options.

My guess is that the vast majority of men who seek to use this Band-Aid have not considered more natural supplement options. These natural options will not pose any of the side effects that Viagra exposes you too.

Plus, one simple thing you can do if you are concerned of becoming impotent in your later years is to start exercising.

Studies have proven that active men who engage in regular physical activity lowered their risk of experiencing impotence.

Exercise helps ward off impotence the same way it can prevent heart attacks, by keeping blood vessels open. Also, if you are experiencing fertility problems improving your diet and watching your stress levels would make great first steps toward remedying this problem.

A healthy diet like that described in my Total Health Program would be the most important step, as without the proper nutrients, all of the body systems, including the reproductive system, will not work optimally.
