The majority of babies born in three years' time will have parents who are not married, official figures suggest.
The proportion of children born out of wedlock rose in 2012 for the 40th consecutive year to 47.5%. By 2016 it is expected to rise to more than 50%.
Figures from the Office for National Statistics go back to 1938 when just 4% of babies had unmarried parents.
One former children's minister called on the government to tackle family breakdown by supporting marriage.
Tim Loughton told the Daily Telegraph without marriage, people "drift in and out of relationships very easily".
"In families where parents break up children do less well at school, are more likely to suffer mental health problems and are more likely to have substance abuse problems," he said.
"The government needs to send a very clear message that it supports marriage. That's why married tax breaks are so important."
Married minority
David Cameron has been under pressure from some in the Conservative Party to reward marriage in the tax system.
Plans being considered by the prime minister, which could be introduced in the autumn, could make four million married couples and civil partners £150 a year better off.
The proportion of couples that are married has now fallen below 50% according to the 2011 census - the first time since 1801 (when figures were first collected) that they have been in a minority.
There were 729,674 babies born in 2012 - up from 723,913 the previous year.

It is irrelevant whether parents are married or not but it is important that two people are involved in bringing up the children they have produced. A partnership is less 'throw-away' if there are legal entanglements which will serve to protect the interests of children and the partner left alone if a relationship founders.
Morality counts for nothing when the taxpayer foots the bill though.

The point of these comments is about WHY less people are getting married and why that is,
The pros and cons of single parents, same sex partnerships & conventional marriage is not the issue, the point to comment on is why more people are not bothering to get married and the reasons behind it.

I thought that the majority of babies were already born out of wedlock to be honest. I've been married 4 years and am trying to start a family, and I honestly don't know many other people in my position. These days it's sadly the norm to live with your other half, have children and then perhaps think about getting married or buying a house together in that order.

If you're going to have a family, then the couple must function as a team. Marriage brings stability and clarity to a relationship. A happy marriage is the best foundation for a happy family; its not the only the way to manage things, but it is a simple and straightforward step that shows a degree of mutual commitment. If you haven't got married then are you waiting for a better offer?

It is difficult to say if the absence of marriage reflects or causes social pathologies, but the link is clear. The UK seems locked into a route of downward social spiral that will takes generations (if ever) to correct.
