(TRFW News) By now it’s no surprise that we are seeing more and more Americans consuming sugar-free products. Sugar is killing us more than we realize and research shows that sugar is actually more addicting than cocaine. This is an astonishing fact and leads me to wonder if the Food and Drug Administration should ban sugar altogether.

I cannot imagine people getting arrested for sugar consumption. Yet it is illegal to use cocaine, so why not sugar? In fact, nearly 70% of Americans and 1.5 billion people worldwide are overweight, and this number is expected to increase to 2.3 billion people worldwide by 2015! (1)

Here’s a statistical overview of sugar consumption from the last 190 years or so…

Sugar consumption since the 1820s has increased dramatically and at an astonishing rate. In the 1820s, Americans only consumed one 12-oz can of soda every 5 days on average and approximately 20lbs of sugar yearly. In contrast, today Americans consume 17 cans of soda every 5 days on average and about 130lbs of sugar yearly! (2)

Moreover, the average American will consume about 3,550lbs of sugar over the course of their lifetime. This equates to 3lbs of sugar per week! (2)

Studies show that sugar is 8 times more addicting than cocaine!

Dr. Mark Hyman has been researching the effects of sugar in the human body for 20 years and has collected all his findings into his new book, “The Blood Sugar 10-Day Detox Diet.” He says, “Sugar is the new nicotine. Sugar is the new fat – except fat is not addictive in the way that sugar is. And worse, sugar actually causes diabetes and obesity.” (1)

In 2013, a group of researchers conducted a study to see if Oreo cookies are just as addictive as drugs for lab rats. Researchers used specific drugs such as heroin and cocaine. The shocking matter, to put it bluntly, is that they found these drugs are no more addicting than Oreos and in fact, they found that the cookies activated more neurons in the brain’s “pleasure center” than exposure to drugs. Americans have a hard time overcoming addictions because their bodies are confused.

Dr. Hyman says, “People can’t manage their behavior and their eating because their taste buds and their biology have been hijacked by processed, hyper-palatable, high glucose, high sugar foods that drive their hormones and neurotransmitters to make them eat more.” (1)

Dr. Hyman suggests going on a detox to re-boot the system. People with any of the following symptoms should consider a detox: cravings for sugar and carbs, having trouble losing weight, high blood sugar or high blood pressure, eating when not feeling hungry, feeling sluggish, feeling agitated, cannot sleep, or experiencing withdrawal symptoms. To learn more about the sugar industry, check out the documentary called, “Fed Up,” which discusses the truth about sugar and what the government does not want you to know. (5)(6)

This is good information to know and share with those you love…and if this all doesn’t shock you, I don’t know what will…!
