Josh Paniagua, November 19, 2014, Alternative, Health, Alternative, Health,

(MassReport.com) Allow me to start off by explaining what a root canal is. The root canal is an empty space inside of a tooth that contains soft tissues including nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue. The largest portion of the root canal is called the “pulp chamber”. Dental pulp promotes growth and development of adult teeth for the first couple years they emerge. From there, it acts as a source of nourishment and hydration for the tooth.

When dental pulp becomes infected or compromised, a root canal procedure is often recommended and performed. Here’s a paraphrased version of the procedure.

Step 1: X rays are run to determine the shape of the root canal.

Step 2: An access hole is drilled into the tooth

Step 3: Dental pulp, bacteria, nerve tissue, and debris is cleaned from the access hole using root canal files. These files are stuck inside the hole in the tooth to clean deeper in the canal, with the size of the file tapering up with each cleans.

Step 4: The canal is flushed, usually with water or sodium hypochlorite (which becomes bleach when mixed with water)

Step 5: Depending on the degree of infection or recommendation of the dentist, a filling may be put in the same day or days later. If a final filling procedure is scheduled for a future date, the patient is given a temporary filling and medication to keep infection at bay.

Step 6: Possible follow-ups may be required in order to keep the tooth from completely rotting out of your skull.

In a nutshell, a root canal is basically the same thing as taxidermy being performed on a tooth. Everything sustaining that tooth and keeping it alive has been removed and in this case, is replaced with a gutta-percha (a rubbery compound often used in root canal fillings). The tooth is dead at this point.

Now, as unappealing as it sounds, the actual procedure isn’t quite the main focus as much as its consequences are.

When sterilization of a root canal is performed, it is expected to sterilize an enormous network of canals called “dental tubules”. These tubules are in such vast microscopic numbers, if they were to be laid out flat, they would stretch for 3-9 miles. That’s a lot of microscopic canals to penetrate and sterilize, don’t you think? It is. According to Dr. Lisa Garcia, it’s impossible. So what happens is traces of infection are left in these canals and can lead to further damage in other parts of the body.

In her 105 installment in her web series, Dr. Lisa Garcia tells of a patient that was experiencing swelling in her leg. She was referred to Dr. Garcia by a physician who believed her past root canal may be the cause of her symptoms.

“This patient had no history of pain in the root canal tooth, nor were there any signs of infection on the x-ray. After careful evaluation and understanding that the tooth may be associated with the swelling in her leg, the patient decided to extract the root canal tooth. I extracted the tooth, and one day following the procedure, her husband noticed that the swelling was gone.

He actually made the comment that her leg looked ‘very sexy’. To this day, her leg is normal.”

This isn’t the only case of root canals causing further issues. A woman named Melanie Yarbrough shared her story involving complications with her root canal procedure. Melanie tells of her ears popping, throat swelling, difficulties swallowing, gynecological issues, chest pains, weight gain, and much more. Melanie got to a point where she had to force herself to function in order to handle her job at Wal-Mart in order to support her children (around 3 and 6 at the time).

Melanie’s ordeal lasted about four years when she came into contact with a woman that showed her the truth about root canal procedures. She had her read an artciel about “Root Canal Cover-Up Exposed” by Dr. Meinig. When she was convinced her root canal could be the reason for her symptoms, she had it removed. Sure enough, Melanie’s health began to restore itself and her quality of life was greatly lifted.

If these cases tell us one thing, it’s this: root canals are not the best way to go. If you have a tooth rotting out in your mouth, do you really think hollowing it out and stuffing it with rubber is the best way to go? Or would you rather get the rotten bone out of your mouth and avoid further complications?

So what if you don’t want to be missing a tooth rotten or not? Well, there are alternatives outside and within the traditional procedure. For example, a Los Angeles dentist Dr. Glenn Sperbeck uses one of these alternatives. Dr. Sperbeck uses Ozone gas to clear cavities of any and all bacteria. Ozone gas invades the infected area deeper than chlorine, making it superior to liquid chlorine in this procedure. If done properly, a full root canal may not even be necessary as more living tissue from the tooth is preserved. Other methods include eradicating bacteria with calcium hyrdroxide which is suggested to be a better sterilizer than chlorine as well.

It is also believed that with a well balanced diet, you can completely avoid the need for a root canal. A lot of our tooth decay rates have virtually everything to do with the unhealthy things we eat. Not only does eating healthy protect your teeth from being exposed to harmful acids and sugars, but healthy diet also boosts your immune system. Healthy diet may also be able to reverse the potentially damaging effects of a root canal.

There are safer alternatives to an otherwise outdated procedure. Share this around and let’s see if we can help get these safer methods to be used in normal dentistry.
